My child has Dyslexia. Should I be worried?

Understand and Accept Dyslexia.

Worrying that your child has Dyslexia and it might affect their future is understandable. Knowing how to manage it will take some load off your mind. You do however need to get some work done, but I wouldn’t say that it is worrying. Understanding how common this condition is and how to manage it will ease your mind.

Dyslexia is NOT an illness that has a direct impact on physical and mental health. The good news is that, if your child has Dyslexia, the condition can be managed with professional interventions such as formal assessments and Dyslexia tutoring services. Before the awareness of Dyslexia, people lived through their lives normally, and some picked up literacy naturally later in the years. It is common that after adults learn more about the signs and behaviors of Dyslexia, they feel that they might have had Dyslexia when they were young. Common reactions such as “That explains why I feel giddy when I study” or “No wonder I couldn’t catch up with my classmates”. Even though as possibly Dyslexics, they turn out to be fine adults with successes in their lives as well.

Based on worldwide statistics, it affects around 4-10% of the population worldwide. Of course, there are more that go unnoticed due to the limited awareness of this condition among us. I will talk more about the awareness in the later posts.

Common Traits Of Dyslexia

Motor coordination, mental calculation, and concentration are some of the common traits of Dyslexics. In the aspect of literacy, there are 3 characteristics that Dyslexics possess, and these impact the acquisition of literacy skills. The literacy difficulties lead to frequent mistakes in literacy tasks such as grammar, spelling, comprehension, or writing sentences. With all these differences compared to their peers, other difficulties such as emotional and behavioral arise.

There is no permanent cure for Dyslexia yet. However, you can ease your worry about Dyslexia by knowing that there are techniques that they can learn to employ throughout their life that reach automaticity eventually. Therefore, it is crucial for Dyslexics to have early intervention, to learn the right techniques and how to remember them. My lessons are targeted to help dyslexic children to learn not just the techniques, but to master them and become a practitioner of the language techniques that lead them to lifetime automaticity.
